Introduction
Chao-Ton Su, Ph.D., is Chair Professor of Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. Dr. Su received his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering (1993) from the University of Missouri, Columbia, USA. Prior to that, he gained industrial experience working for Yung Kuang Hwa Metal Co., Ltd. (1981-1982) and OAK Far East Electronics Inc (1984). Later, he held a full-time faculty position at National Chiao Tung University (instructor, 1985-1993; associate professor, 1994-1998; professor, 1998-2004), and National Tsing Hua University (professor, 2004-2006; distinguished professor, 2006-2008; chair professor, 2008- ), Hsinchu, Taiwan, and was a visiting professor at Tokyo University of Science (2003) and University of Missouri-Columbia (2012). Dr. Su is an Academician of the International Academy for Quality (2008), Fellow of American Society for Quality (2015), Fellow of Chinese Society for Quality (2017), and Fellow of Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers (2017). Dr. Su is the founder and served as a former chairman (2003-2005) of the Chinese Society for Six Sigma. He is also a member (2002-2013) of Taiwan National Quality Award Review Group and a member (2003, 2010, 2015-2019) of Government Service Quality Award Review Group, Executive Yuan, Taiwan.
Dr. Su’s awards include the Merit MOST Research Fellow Award (2019), the Shanghai Magnolia Quality Contribution Award (2015), the Walter E. Masing Book Prize from IAQ (2014), the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award from J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, USA (2012), the Outstanding Industrial Engineer Award (2010) from Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Outstanding Research Award (2000, 2002 and 2012) from the National Science Council (Taiwan), the Individual Award of the Taiwan National Quality Award (2001), the Individual Quality Award (2000) from Chinese Society for Quality, and the best paper awards from Asia Pacific Quality Conference (2015), ANQ Congress (2006, 2008), Chinese Society for Quality (2000, 2010, 2012), and Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers (2007). He also received an outstanding teaching award (2008) from the College of Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. The results of his research have been published in numerous academic journal papers and presented at a variety of national and international conferences. His current research interests include quality engineering and management, operations management, and computational intelligence and its applications.
